Product Description The 204MF includes one pair medium-grit (brown) triangle stones for aggressive sharpening and one pair of fine-grit (white) triangle stones for professional-grade finishing. Their patented triangular shape sharpens plain edges on the flat sides and spyderedges (serrations) on the corners. A groove running the stone's length sharpens pointed items such as fishhooks, darts, awls, and punches. Keyed slots/holes in the abs plastic base precisely preset the stone's sharpening angle to a 30° (15° each side) or 40° (20° each side) for thick and thin profiled knife blades. On the end of the base is a 12.5° scissor setting. When turned over, the base's underside accommodates two side-by-side stones (flat side up) for benchstone sharpening. Plastic lid snaps halfway over the base creates a stable hand-hold and a pair of brass safety rods protect the user's hands during sharpening. All of the components fit into the base and the lid snaps on as a cover for portability, or the base can be bolted to a table or counter-top for permanent use. Instructional 204MF DVD and booklet is included.

Best knife sharpening solution I've used. July 27, 2010 David M. Robbins (Sherman Oaks, CA) Using the sharpener is simple and comes with both a guide-book and DVD. I can do scissors, pins, axes and serrated blades and all kinds of ridiculous things but I've only used it for scissors and straight-edge knives. There are two different grits of sharpening stones and the sharpener provides two angles to work with, 40 degrees (for edges) and 30 for back bevels. Basically the smaller the angle the sharper the blade but it'll also wear out faster because you have less metal contacting the surface you're cutting.
I've been using this since I was a kid in Boy Scouts, and it's kept my camping and cooking tools in tip-top shape. Over the past 10 years or so I've purchased two of them, although the first didn't exactly wear out from use... I just gave it away to a friend.
Aside from maintenance, I also use this to repair knives that my friends have abused and dulled from years of neglect. The surprise I have after using and sharpening my friends' knives can only mean that you will have the same reaction to seeing how sharp your knives are supposed to be. A simple test I use to see if my knives are sharp enough is this: Does it cut through tomato skin easily or does it catch or squish? A properly sharpened knife should go through a fresh (or even squishy) tomato cleanly and without effort.
Pick one of these up! It'll last you a decade and make cooking that much more enjoyable.
total system July 20, 2010 Lynda Hughes Before I got this sharpener, it took a combination of several sharpening kits to even come close to a good sharpening job. With the Spyderco, everything needed to take a blade from almost hopeless to razor sharpness is in one place. The instructions are very clear and detailed enough that someone who has never sharpened a blade can easily put a good edge on a blade on the first try.
The price is great, and this makes a wonderful gift.
Excellent sharpener July 10, 2010 Threesecondrush DVD that came with sharpener was quite worthless, watched ten minutes and I didn't see anything of use, and turned it off. Instruction manual was sufficient. Sharpener is simple to use, and works well. No complaints about the sharpener. Wish I didn't have to pay money for the DVD.
Simply Amazing!! July 7, 2010 Fred Schmed 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Before we start, I have to say that I'm a fairly mechanically inclined person and I can figure out how a lot of things work without instructions. I'm a finish construction worker. That said, I've never been able to properly sharpen a knife to save my life!!
I've had this sharpener for about 6 months now. I've read at least 100 reviews about it, even before I bought it. I'm sure they're all accurate, but what you need to observe is the amount of positive over negative. Certainly, since this is a manual sharpener, there will be a few people who are not able to make this work. The overwhelming majority, however, will.
After reading so many reviews, I decided to purchase the diamond and extra fine stones initially. I will say that in all honesty, this system is not complete without them. If you truly want the whole gamut, you must purchase these as well.
When I bought this sharpener I had knives that spanned from butter knife dull to pretty sharp. One of those knives was my first knife ever, a Buck knife my Dad gave me when I was 12 and that was 24 years ago. Just so you know, I've always been the person who could sharpen a semi sharp knife into butter knife quality. That buck knife is now twice as sharp as the day I received it! Really. I can now do a one pass shave with it.
If you own kitchen knives like Henckles or Wusthof then you are fool for not keeping them scary sharp. This sharpener costs less than one chef knife and it will keep it scary sharp forever. I do about 50 (25 per side) strokes on the corner and flat side of the fine and extra fine about once a month (Henckles) and it slices onions with no sting. For the un-initiated, the reason onions sting your eyes is because the dullness of the blade crushes instead of cutting. A truly sharp knife reduces the tears.
The best advice I can give is to just buy from a reputable seller and return it if you think it sucks. Spyderco has an awesome reputation and if it really sucks for you, they do have excellent customer service.
Trust in the many who have tried and declared true!
Still some questions June 15, 2010 game play addict (U.S.A.) I bought the Sharpmaker after numerous members in [...] recommended it. The ability to keep a consistent angle was the reason I bought this. I tried it out last weekend and it sharpened many of my dull kitchen knives. My question is if the diamond stones and the ultra fine stones were necessary. If so, it would have been nice to include it in the tutorials.
If you buy this product, open the box carefully. Read the instructions and watch the video. Once you do that, it should be easy to use. My only real concern is if the other stones are needed and if stropping is also recommended. All of this was not covered in the tutorials.
