Product Description The Worlds Only Self-Flushing, Self-Washing Cat Box. With CatGenie 120, you?ll never touch litter again. It automatically flushes all cat waste out of the home then washes itself completely clean. The new 120 SaniSolution Cartridge is biodegradable and recyclable (unlike cat litter which is neither). Holds 120 washes and when set on Cat Activation provides 240 washes (and one Cartridge is smaller and uses less plastic than the lid of one plastic litter jug). IMPORTANT NOTE: The 120 Cartridge only works in the CatGenie 120 Model. The 120 Cartridge (clear) will NOT work in the original CatGenie, which only uses the 60 Cartridge (green) The 60 Cartridge will NOT work in the CatGenie 120.

An expensive lesson. July 28, 2010 Firaga Oh, it works. The first day, maybe the first week, it works great.
And then you have that delightful first experience with the scooper not catching all the poop.
Mm MM, and then you get the delicate aroma of sanisolution-soaked feces BAKING. It's disgusting.
We tried it with these things about a year ago, and the public should be warned.
They jammed. They jammed weekly. When they jammed, they backed up. This led to having to DIG OUT THE DECOMPOSING FECES FROM THE HOPPER OR WHATEVER. So. Disgusting. Much much worse than scooping could ever be.
Oh, and if theres a power fluctuation? Any kind? The programming dies.
We went to visit the in-laws for 3 days, with 3 genies all set and programmed. We came back to a house with a semi-flooded laundry room (hey genies), the poor things choked with poop and old urine, the pellets floating and.. well, the cats had taken to the floor, after completely exhausting the things. We haven't broken them of the habit since, and are saving up to replace the living room carpet.
And they're LOUD. They crank, they grind, they make huge amounts of noise, and scared one of my kitties so badly he took to avoiding the laundry room altogether- in favor of doing his business in the dead center of the carpet.
He spent his days hiding under a chair, and the dynamic of the house has never recovered.
When we got them to take them back, the shipping was enourmous. They DID let us return them, I'll give them that, but between the cleanings, the stench of the baked poo, the price of the sanisolution (it adds up FAST. It doesn't seem to last half so long as claimed.).. not to even go into the emotional trauma incurred, or the upcoming living room renovations.. just all around a terrible experience.
If you have one cat, it might work ok. Maybe even two if they're small (did I mention these things, despite being HUGE, seem to be very difficult for large cats to maneuver in? That too, then.) and tidy (the granules also like to stick in paws, see, and so end up all over when the kitties jump on things they shouldn't. Like in our bed. And on the dining room table.)..otherwise, buyer beware.
As I've said, my cats (and house) have yet to recover. :(
Regret the day I bought this! July 25, 2010 J. Blake (Ohio) I've had this in use for 7 months. I bought this knowing that after a year I would break even on the cost of the unit vs. the cost of litter box supplies. Thinking that it came with a one-year warranty I thought I couldn't go wrong. I won't make it to a year and they don't honor that mythical warranty, they just want you to fix it yourself. I loved this when my cat first started using it, it worked great and I didn't have any litter box smell anymore. After about a month I noticed that it smashed the solids into pieces too small to be sifted so I had to start scooping the solids myself. After 2 months I started getting errors every time I ran it and since it took 2 months to get my cat to take to it I was well past the 90 day money back period. Customer service never answers the phone and when they do call you back it's days later when you're unavailable and you've already spent hours fixing it yourself. When you do speak to them they are so rude you'll never bother calling them again anyway. They only tell you to do what the pamphlet tells you to do so they are useless. Trying to fix this is so much more disgusting than cleaning a simple litter box and you'll find yourself doing that quite often. I'm at the point now where water won't even run into the unit so I have to stand over it while it's running and pour pitchers of water into it to get it to wash (about 1/2 hour everyday now). Now the thing stinks to high heaven, even after cleaing, and I'm going to have to break down and go back to a regular litter box. The cartridges definitely don't last as long as they say they do and they aren't cheap to replace. Every supply order I've placed directly to Petnovations has been a problem also, including one order that got "lost" in their system and I totally ran out of sanisolution for 4 days (no apology at all from them). They have some serious design flaws with this system and I am believe by their general attitude that they know it and don't care. If you see positive reviews question how long that reviewer has had their unit. I would never buy this again.
So much feces on the floor and my enemy: the Water Sensor... July 19, 2010 Melissa Bernard (Worcester. MA) First off I would like to say that I would rather give the Catgenie a rating of 3.5 but the star system does not allow for that.
I first discovered Catgenie while researching an alternative to wasteful clumping cat litter. This was back when the 60 model was out. After reading reviews I decided I had better wait until they made a new and improved model before spending so much money on one. So when the 120 came out and it had appeared they'd cleared up all the bugs, I was sold.
The unit was easy to set up. We let the old cat litter get dirty like the manual instructed; this did not work however. The cats would scale the mountain of feces in the old cat box daily rather than use the Catgenie. I started doing research on people who had a similar problem with their cats refusing to take to the Catgenie, they offered the suggestion that I mix the Genie granules in with the old litter until they got used to it and eventually the cats (although still preferring the old cat box) started using the Genie as well. Things seemed okay for a while. I put the Genie on "Cat Activation" mode but with 4 cats, the unit was washing almost all the time so I had it programmed to wash 3 times a day.
I have one cat with IBD who has ALWAYS pooped on the floor near the litter box. He went right back to this shortly after he started using the Catgenie. The difference this time was that two of the other cats started doing this. They would pee in the Genie and crap on the floor. After doing some more internet research I read that some cats prefer to pee in one box and crap in another... so I actually bought ANOTHER Catgenie (I know at this point you are probably thinking I'm nuts!). This actually solved the problem for a little while, but the cats went right back to peeing in the boxes and pooping on the floor. This is made worse by the fact that one of the cats has chronic diarrhea which is very difficult to "scoop" or clean. (Honestly, it wouldn't matter if she DID use the genie regularly because the Genie just smears the diarrhea all over the unit including the back which does not get washed and bakes it to a crisp for me... it's actually better if she DOES crap on the floor sadly enough).
There are some features of the Catgenie that I really like.
PROS-
Cleaner cat feet! We used to use "Worlds Best Cat Litter" but the cats always had dirty litter dust on their feet that they would sprinkle and smear all over everything! (Especially my Wacom drawing tablet for my computer)
Overall Cleanliness. It's true that the granules do not eliminate or cover up odor, but with the push of a button the odorous substance will be gone. The granules stay pretty clean and keep pests away (our old litter would harbor fruit flies).
OK customer service. It's true that you have to leave a message and wait for customer service, but any issues I've had were solved by the following day no questions asked (I had to have one of the bowls replaced because it wouldn't rotate and a maintenance cartridge replaced because it was registering 0 washes when it was full).
Better for the environment. I definitely use less litter granules in the Genie than I would traditional litter. The cartridges and granules are recyclable/biodegradable. (As for the amount of paper towels I'm sending to the landfill from cleaning cat soup off the floor, that's a whole 'nother issue).
Long lasting supplies. Even with four cats, I don't change the cartridges or refill the granules very often. I keep costs down by fishing for supplies on Ebay auctions (usually this happens if someone accidentally buys 120 supplies for their 60 Genie).
CONS-
Cat acceptance. This varies by cat but my cats just have a passion for poopin' on the floor.
You still have to clean it. Poopins get all over the back of the unit and it has to be cleaned out from time to time with a toilet brush (which, as I'm sure you have already imagined is DISGUSTING). Also the cats naturally rub on the sidewalls when they're turning around so the sidewalls get coated in cat hair and oil which does not get cleaned in a regular cycle.
Granules everywhere. The granules are made of some sort of adhesive that sticks to cat feet and human feet alike. They will be tracked all over your house and you'll hear your cats coming by the "click clack" of their feet. The floor mats they sell actually do help a little (they would only really be effective if your whole floor was made of them) but my "special needs" IBD cat had a bad habit of taking the mats and smearing them in the diarrhea cat's feces so I had to take them away.
The Water Sensor... the bane of the Catgenie owners existence. The Water Sensor is a clear V shaped plastic device that detects the level of water in the Genie during a wash cycle. If the sensor gets dirty the unit beeps until you come downstairs. take apart the unit, and clean the sensor off. We had to take the Genies off of program mode and only use manual cleaning cycles because the beeping water sensor would wake us up at all times of the night. We do not have lime build up in our water, I have no explanation for why the water sensors are constantly dirty. Sometimes the unit will not beep when the sensor is dirty and will run a wash cycle with no water which is a whole new smell sensation of hot cat urine and feces under the dryer. The manual even boasts that you'll NEVER have to clean the sensor if you run regular maintenance cycles... yeah right! Last time I ran a maintenance cartridge, I cleaned the sensor before hand and it still beeped that it was dirty after the maintenance cycle.
Even after all this I actually LIKE the Catgenies. I dread having to go back to the old dusty fly ridden cat litter. I just wish my cats felt the same way.
Glad I bought this July 13, 2010 ESC_1978_ This thing is great. It liquifies all waste into the toilet and eliminates odors. It is self-cleaning, so for the first time ever, our bathroom with the litterbox in it actually smells good. The cleaning cycle takes a little longer than I would like, but other than that, I have no criticisms of this product. It makes life a lot more convenient not having to maintain a nasty litterbox on a daily basis. It's a little pricey, but totally worth it. Highly recommended.
Junk with misleading return policy July 13, 2010 catlover 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The manufacturer advertises a 90 day return policy which is emphasized on the cover of the owners manual. If you buy the product from Amazon you only get a 30 day return policy. The product leaked when I received it and it took the manufacturer 2 weeks to send a replacement part which was a hassle to replace. The product is a maintenance nightmare and my cats went on the carpet when I took away their litter box. You can't put the genie back in the bottle and I am out $280.
