One year of heavy use...... July 26, 2010 Bowman I buy knives to use, not to brag about. I am not in the military and will never be. The person who said "Its a tool" understands what a knife is. If that rubs you the wrong way.....buy a chainsaw.....you are not Bear Grylls or Survivorman....that is the only "Internet Hype" here.....you buy a knife because you use it and it serves a purpose as a "tool" to do a job, NOTHING ELSE. Deer camp is the "proving ground" for all knives, not your back yard or shelf. I bought this knife over a year ago and it served me well at Bow Camp, Gun Season Camp, Black Powder Camp and even Turkey Season......if the finish scratches....so what? If the serrations are on the "wrong" side....you are not using it as a tool......and..omg if it rattles in the sheath....you have never been in any place nonfictional.
Very satisfied with this knife but the sheath is overbuilt July 17, 2010 G. Schauble (washington) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I did a lot of research before choosing the Gerber LMF 2, so you can trust me if you are just starting your search for a great backwoods knife that you've just found it. I wanted a high quality survival knife that wouldn't fail me in the backcountry but at a reasonable price and this is it. This knife is heavier than I expected and I suppose this would bother some folks who intend on wearing it on extended hikes but I wore it on an 8 mile hike the other day and it didn't bother me a bit. I like the heft and solid feel of the knife for chopping and hacking. I crafted a bow on a recent camping trip using just this knife and it was amazing for tillering the limbs. You could work all day long with this knife the handle is so comfortable, and it absorbs shock amazingly well. The knife comes fairly sharp but I took my Lansky sharpening system to it and gave it a razer edge and it has held it very well. The carbide sharpener in the sheath works pretty well and I have read that the carbide blades are replaceable but I can't find them anywhere online so I just use my speedy sharp tool to maintain the edge and I will rely on the sheath sharpener for survival situations rather than wear it out. I also read online that the rubberized grip on a lot of these knives was falling apart from being taken in and out of the sheath but mine has no signs of wear. I wonder if Gerber caught on to this and re formulated the rubber. Also the retention straps to hold my knife in the sheath fit just perfect out of the box, they aren't too tight like a lot of other folks have mentioned theirs were. I would say my only complaint about this knife is the sheath. I loved it at first but now I hate it. It's way too bulky. If you compare the size of the knife to the sheath it's ridiculous. And it holds the knife way too tight. If you wear the knife just on a belt and try to remove the knife you will need both hands because the belt loop is way too big on the sheath and the knife fits so tight. I have to wear the knife crossdraw and upside down on my belt using the tighter lower loop so I can draw the knife one handed downward. The sheath comes with straps for leg carry but how irritating would that get on a hike. One plus to the sheath is it can be fastened to a backpack in a variety of ways so that is cool. I am highly considering just ordering a leather sheath for the knife online. Anyways, that should cover it. Still a fantastic knife for the money. It works well for home remodeling work too, I have been wearing mine the last week while remodeling our bathroom and have found it comes in handy for a lot of jobs.
Excellent Knife June 30, 2010 CSL 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I will begin with the negative point: the blade finish isn't invulnerable, and rubs thin at some high points from just inserting and removing the knife from its sheath. That's it. That's all. The only negative aspect of this knife. Who cares? No blade finish is going to stay perfect forever on any knife, and it doesn't negatively impact performance.
The high points? Here they are: great blade geometry, flawless handle, good steel, good edge from the factory, good edge retention, amazing sheath (comfort, versatility, knife retention), totally reasonable price, nice balance/weight, and Gerber quality.
If you're considering this knife, just stop thinking about it and buy. You will not be disappointed.
Best knife! June 15, 2010 N. Sturgis (Washington) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This knife may not have the looks of a Ka-Bar but it definitely can keep up if not surpass it.
The blade is sharp and the built in sharpener is great. I do a lot of backpacking and wilderness based tasks and this knife does not leave my side. The holster is well built and just looks plain mean on your thigh holster.
It is a very heavy and solid knife. If you need a survival knife or a military use knife there is not one knife that can hold up against this one.
The holster is quiet for those instances where it is necessary.(Military know what I mean.
It's All You'll Need! May 16, 2010 Blade Runner (Naperville, IL) I was immediately impressed by the weight and balance of this knife. The blade is the right length for multi-use and it's broad enough for decent strength. It has serrations down a good portion of the blade, which I require on my knives. The handle just begs to be grabbed; it fits my hand so well! It's a non-slip material with friction knobs and lengthwise indentations. A perfect fit for the knife in general. And the metal butt gives a unique balance to the knife, adding weight if needed for a slice or blow. The beveled point on the butt would surely break through most glass, easily crack walnuts, or deliver a "less lethal" blow to an opponent while certainly getting their attention, no matter where it landed. I'm also impressed by the holes that would allow for using paracord to lash the knife to a staff or to your hand in emergency situations. The plastic (Kytex?) sheath has plenty of openings for multiple tying or lashing options. I have black paracord woven through mine for those uses I mentioned. The top of the sheath securely grasps the hilt of the knife. And you have to appreciate the utility of a sharpener built right into the sheath. My version of the knife came with a nylon apparatus to which the sheath attaches. This allows it to hung from a belt, attached to Molle webbing, or function as a drop-leg option with the two leg straps that are included. These leg straps have a rubberized friction surface on the inside and quiet plastic buckles. Two nylon straps with snaps further secure the knife's handle. I appreciate the buckles and snap attachments because I have very good hearing and must assume any opponent might too. Hook and loop closures can be so noisy in tactical situations. Overall, my opinion is this is one great knife for many applications and a very good value for the money. Buy it, it's the only general knife you'll need!
